- The tale is given that the title "The Strong Hand" was given because he being at odds with the political
powers was thrown to the Lions and it is said that he took his coat of Mail wrapped it about his arm thrust
his hand in the lions mouth and tore out its tongue, Hence he was called William "The Strong Hand".
