- V M Norr: Some Early English Pedigrees P. 60
Of obscure origins, she is said to be Breton and born around 911. Sprota would be the daughter of Count Juhel Bérenger de Rennes. According to the history of the Duchy of Normandy 3, she would be the daughter of Hébert Comte de Senlis, but this thesis has long since been abandoned
what do we know about her parents? more or less NOTHING
so do not add any speculations
Sprota was a Breton captive of the Vikings in France. She married William Longsword in the Viking fashion (more danico or 'common law marriage'), becoming his 2nd wife and the mother of William's only known son, Richard I of Normandy.
Sprota lived in her own household at Bayeux, under William's protection, and it was there that Richard was born in 936, while William the Longsword was away quashing a rebellion at Pré-de Bataille.
William died in 942, and 10 year old Richard succeeded him as Ruler of Normandy. King Louis IV took Richard into custody under the pretext of teaching him 'courtliness'. In reality Louis "abused the boy with bitter insults", calling him "the son of a whore who had seduced another woman's husband."
After the death of her husband William, finding herself no longer under his protection, Sprota was rescued from her dangerous situation by a wealthy landowner Esperleng, who operated mills at Pîtres. Sprota and Esperleng married and became the parents of a son, Rodulf of Ivry, and several daughters.
