Notes |
- Linus was son or grandson of Caractacus or Caradoc who was taken with his family to Rome in 51 AD and there pardoned by the Emperor Claudias for having instigated an uprising against the Romans. Caradoc was held there
until 57 AD.
While in Rome Caradoc's daughter Eurgein was converted to Christianity by St Paul, the Apostle. The Sister of
Eurgain was Gladys born 0036 AD known as Claudia after marrying a Roman Citizen, Rufus Pudens Pudentius,
in 0053 AD. They resided at Pallatium Brittanicum in Rome which was given to the couple as dowry by Caradoc
and also used for Christian worship. The children of Claudia were brought up at the feet of St Paul. Linus is also
stated to have been grandson of Caradoc and son of Claudia. Linus became the 1st Bishop (Pope) of Rome
succeeded by Anacletus and then Clement.
Upon their return to South Wales Eurgain established a Church 'Cor Eurgain' in 57 AD near Llanilltud Fawr
(Llantwit Major) in Glamorganshire. The Church in Wales denies this position rather believing that christianity was
brought by the Romans at the later time. This position however is untenable.
Gildas,British historian of 542 A.D. says: "We know that Christ, the true Sun, afforded his light to our island in the
last year of the reign of Tiberias Caesar." This would be somewhere from A.D. 34 to A.D. 38.
Robert Parsons, the Jesuit, in his "Three Conversions of England," Vol 1 p. 15 says: " It seems nearest the truth
that the British church was originally planted by Grecian teachers, such as came from the east, and not by Romans."
James H. Andersen: Gods Covenant Race pp 52-57 cites several references supporting the position that
Christanity was established in England before the Roman arms penetrated the Isles.
According to English history the first Roman Catholic missionary to Britain, St Augustine, came in 596 A.D. In
Britain he "found a church constructed by no human art, but by the hands of Christ himself, for the salvation of his
people."
